In recent years misinformation, disrespect, and bullying grew dramatically, increasing polarization and division within our community. If individual residents tried to correct the misinformation, their efforts were often attacked with disrespectful, even hateful comments. This tactic led many residents to become silent rather than deal with the personal attacks and retribution in person or on social media such as Facebook, Nextdoor, and other outlets.
In late 2023 a number of residents who wanted to reduce those tactics, came together to counter this barrage of attacks. It rapidly became evident that we needed to promote Civility, Respect, Engagement and Well-being within SCOV, hence CREW. Since then we, along with others who believe in our approach have helped balance the scales with facts, not fears, clarify and correct misinformation, and encourage more residents to embrace it.
Does CREW believe everything is perfect in SCOV? No. But our faith in our current and future community leadership to do what is right for all SCOV residents is strong and supportive.
As others have joined to promote our positive approach on social media with uplifting comments, support of our community Board of Directors, Committees and the Administration, some have continued to attack and demean, usually without facts; but, simply with rumor and opinion, creating a false scenario.
CREW has been respectful and factual in correcting misinformation on various media platforms and in conversations with residents. We believe our efforts have resulted in better candidates winning Board seats in the last two elections.
Because of CREW, some of the negativity about SCOV, our Board and Committees has abated. But there are pockets of social media posts that falsely accuse CREW of being filled with propaganda, rhetoric aimed to set Board agendas, controlling committees, working against homeowners, as well as being too positive. These accusations are unfounded as they go against what we believe in and practice. As most residents agree, we support facts and forthrightness.
Since the start of CREW less than 2 years ago, we have seen a positive change in our community, albeit with resistance from some.
As we move forward together let us never forget there is always room for improvement: but, it's best achieved with Civility, Respect, and Engagement directed to the Well-being of all of us.
